Subclass
OCTOCORALLIA (=ALCYONARIA)
Order GORGONACEA
Suborder Alcyoniina
Octocorals with arborescent or clavate form and fleshy stalk
without consolidated axis or medullar region; gastric cavities
of polyps extending to base of colony. In the Atlantic, this
group is limited to a few shallow water species, with the majority
of true “soft corals” inhabiting deeper (>200m) areas.
Family Alcyoniidae
Alcyoniids have dimorphic polyps that more or less
cover the fleshy stalk, and short branchlets that diverge from the
main stalk but are not truly arborescent. Refer to Verseveldt and
Bayer (1988) for some revisions within this family.
The family is represented by only one species in the SAB, Bellonella
rubistella (Deichmann,
1936).
