Coastal Birds in South Carolina - Research & Resources
Banding and Resighting
One way scientists and researchers answer questions about bird populations, is by attaching unique markers, such as color bands, that can be viewed from a distance. SCDNR has been involved in several research projects that have involved banding shorebirds with engraved bands and flags such as American Oystercatchers and Red Knots.
The public can report bands that they observe, although good optics (binoculars, spotting scope, or camera with zoom lens) are needed to view banded birds at a distance. If you encounter a banded bird, be careful not to cause any disturbance. Please record date, location of bird, species of bird, band color(s) and code. You can report bands directly to these webpages.
