Seafood Production Research
The center performs research grant funded seafood production research to develop sustainable and environmentally friendly food production systems. Advances in aquaculture research and production technology development are important since 46% of all seafood is farmed raised and the US imports 91% of its seafood. Nearly 60% of the US seafood comes from Asia including 22% from China. Of the top ten list of the most popular seafood species consumed in the US last year, five are partially or completely dependent on aquaculture for supply. These include shrimp, salmon, tilapia, clams and pangasius (Vietnamese catfish).
