September 16, 2014DNR to begin survey for removal of illegal buoys
The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Law Enforcement Division will begin a survey Oct. 1 to locate illegal buoys along state waterways and lakes. This action is a result of the increasing number of illegal No Wake buoys that are located on many lakes and waterways across the state. They are quickly becoming a navigational hazard and can otherwise be confusing to the public and Law Enforcement.
The South Carolina Code (50-21-710, Section - B) states: No City, County, or person shall mark or obstruct the waters of this State in any manner so as to endanger the operation of watercraft or conflict with the marking system prescribed by the department.
Once the survey is completed, then DNR Law Enforcement officers will begin the task of marking each illegal buoy. Owners of illegal buoys will have 30 days from the date marked on the buoy to remove. DNR will remove any illegal buoys after the 30 days have expired. For questions please call the DNR Law Enforcement Investigation Section at (843) 953-9379.
