- Description:

- Abstract:
- 68 maps representing predicted range and habitat affinity for mammals known to occur in South Carolina were produced. Distributions were based on county occurrences as indicated by recognized experts in the state and by current literature. Habitat preferences were also described by experts as well as documented in the literature. The predicted distribution was based on a 30 meter raster habitat land cover produced by SC-GAP.
- Purpose:
- Mammal species distributions are critical to understanding South Carolina's biodiversity. Prior to SC-GAP mammals had not been mapped in the state according to distribution and habitat affinity. This database comprised a significant component of the SC-GAP project in planning for diversity and serves as a background for future studies of mammal biodiversity within the state.

- Data were compared to species distributions in the following areas with the following accuracy results: Francis Marion Forest - 80.0%, Mt. Bridge Wilderness Area - 67.5%, York County - 61.5%, Fort Jackson - 57%.

- Species range maps were created using range descriptions and maps from several publications. Ranges were delineated by county and land cover habitat associated with each species. Binary maps were created for each species based on presence/absence of species within a given county and land cover type (habitat association). All cells within South Carolina were assigned a value of 1 (presence) or 0 (absence). SC GAP used scientific literature and expert opinion to develop a list of vertebrate species in South Carolina. After expert review, the final list of species contained 455 birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians.

- Process_Description:
- The SC GAP analysis project used scientific literature and expert opinion to develop a list of vertebrate species in South Carolina and model their potential spatial distribution. The range extent was mapped for each species using counties as the basis of its general occurance. The range extent was refined using physiographic regions. Habitat affinities were used as a second component to define predicted distribution. These data provided information regarding each species use of specific vegetation communities that were linked to land cover data. Based on this information, a habitat matrix was created for each species using the 29 classes from the land cover classification.

- A distribution map was created for each of the 455 species. The map combined habitat affinities and county distribution to create distribution maps that indicated areas whose vegetation was capable of supporting individual species. Each species was coded for presence/absence only.
