Summary of the Plan

A 22-mile segment of the Ashley River is designated a State Scenic River under the South Carolina Scenic Rivers Act. The Act enables the SCDNR to administer a voluntary, cooperative river management program that supports a partnership of landowners, local governments, community interests, and agencies, all serving on a scenic river council and working to promote responsible use and stewardship of the Ashley River.

The Ashley Scenic River Management Plan of 2003 (plan) was prepared by SCDNR in partnership with the Ashley Scenic River Advisory Council. The plan outlines a community vision for stewardship of the river to protect and conserve its cultural, ecological, and recreational resources. The plan does not impose or mandate new regulatory restrictions, instead, the plan provides an informational guide for SCDNR and the advisory council to advance protection and management of the river and its resources.

Sections of the management plan are organized under four resource topics to present facts and findings, goals and recommendations to address management of the river. The topics include:

• Recreation Use and Access
• Preservation and Conservation
• Land Management and Development

Other sections of the management plan include landowner options for conservation, buffer standards, public input notes, and a project area description.
