August 25, 201527th Annual Beach Sweep/River Sweep set for Sept. 19
The 27th annual Beach Sweep/River Sweep is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. Each year thousands of people volunteer for the Sweep, South Carolina's largest one-day litter cleanup of beaches, marshes and waterways.
The S.C. Department of Natural Resources is once again partnering with the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium to organize the statewide event, which is held in conjunction with the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup. Anyone can participate – individuals, families, schools, youth groups, civic and conservation clubs and businesses. Volunteers may participate as either site captains or regular volunteers. Site captains organize and lead local cleanups at selected locations. Regular volunteers offer to help and join the scheduled cleanups which are registered by the site captains.
Last year over 4,100 dedicated volunteers removed around 46,000 pounds of litter from the state's beaches, marshes and waterways.
