July 7, 2015Two fishing lakes closed for renovation, restock

Sunrise lake is currently closed and will remain closed until July 2018 for restocking. Lake Oliphant is currently open as of July 1, 2017.

Two lakes managed by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are closed for renovations and restocking. Lake Oliphant in Chester County and Sunrise Lake in Lancaster County closed on July 1, 2015 are both scheduled to reopen in July 2017.

Like many small ponds and lakes, periodically DNR lakes need to be drained and restocked in order to produce good fishing. The process, referred to as renovation, involves draining the lake, removing any fish remaining, adding wood structures and gravel spawning areas to the lake bottom, refilling the lake and restocking with balanced fish populations. Both Oliphant and Sunrise lakes will also receive replacement and repairs to their water control structures to insure the safe and long term function of their dams.

Lake Oliphant is 40-acres fertilized that provides fishing opportunities for largemouth bass, bluegill, shell-cracker and catfish. The lake offers a boat ramp, fishing pier and is handicapped accessible. Lake Oliphant is located off Highway 190 in Chester County. Sunrise Lake in Lancaster County is a 25-acre fertilized lake providing fishing opportunities for largemouth bass, shellcracker, bluegill, and channel catfish. The lake offers a small picnic area and boat ramp. Please note these properties are not owned by DNR, but are part of the leased lands management program.

While Lake Oliphant is close for renovation, DNR staff recommends that anglers visit Mountain Lakes, 42 acre and 10 acre lakes managed by DNR, located off Mountain Lakes Road in Chester County. While Sunrise Lake is closed for renovation, DNR staff recommends that anglers visit Lancaster Reservoir, a 62 acre lake managed by DNR, located off Highway 521 Business in Lancaster County adjacent to the Lancaster Water Department.
