Resources for Landowners and Managers
In South Carolina, many wading bird nesting colonies and foraging areas are on private land. We appreciate the work that landowners put into maintaining and managing their properties to benefit wading birds and other species of wildlife. Landowners and managers are encouraged to contact SCDNR (email wadingbirds@dnr.sc.gov) if they would like assistance with a project that will affect the wading birds utilizing their property. Wood storks are protected by the Endangered Species Act. SCDNR can provide guidance to landowners with storks on their property.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the University of Georgia Savannah River Ecology Laboratory produced a brochure about Wood Stork Conservation and Management for Landowners (Adobe PDF).
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service maintains a website with updates about the status of wood storks, the recovery plan, habitat management guidelines, and other resources.
