DNR honors Cayce man as Certified Fishing Instructor of the Year
The 1st Annual Certified S.C. Department of Natural Resources Fishing Instructor Banquet was held on Jan. 10 at the Clarion Hotel Downtown to thank the instructors for their hard work and dedication. Since the initiation of the volunteer program in Oct. 2011, there are over 140 trained volunteers. These volunteers have provided over 42 Family Fishing Clinics reaching 987 participants with over 400 hours of volunteer time.
Sid Jackson of Cayce was trained in 2012. “He epitomizes what you’d like to see in every volunteer, he always has a positive attitude and is ever eager to provide clinic opportunities for families,” said Lorianne Riggin, S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Aquatic Education Coordinator. Sid carries the attitude that no one wanting to learn about fishing will be turned away. He conducted 14 family fishing clinics and logged over 120 volunteer hours by himself. Congratulations to Sid and thank you again to all volunteers!
DNR trains freshwater anglers each year to become Certified DNR Fishing Instructors for the Aquatic Education Section. These instructors teach the Family Fishing Clinics. Family Fishing Clinics are designed to introduce the basics of freshwater fishing to the young and old. Participants learn how to tie fishing knots, rig rods, cast, fish and more.
If you are interested in becoming a Certified DNR Fishing Instructor, please visit our website to learn about upcoming trainings.
The intention of the Family Fishing Clinics is to introduce participants with little or no angling experience or those who need a refresher to the basics of fishing to increase their future participation in the sport. Participants will learn how and where to fish and have someone to fish with to become confident anglers.
