Marine Education Vessel
E/V Discovery
The Educational Vessel (E/V) Discovery was purchased by the SCDNR Marine Resources Division’s Education Section in 2003, to enhance their ability to provide quality educational programs to groups of both adults and children throughout the state. The vessel is maintained and operated as a joint effort between Vessel Operations and Education, although scheduling and programs are handled by the Education Section. This vessel is a 45’ catamaran with twin fiberglass hulls, a beam of 14 feet, and the draft is less than a foot with the motors up and 2 feet when they are down. She is powered by two Mercury 225 HP 4-Stroke outboard motors. The vessel is capable of carrying up to 40 passengers, can tow a small trawl, has a davit for hydrographic gear and plankton nets, a saltwater wash-down pump, and a full array of electronics (i.e.. Radar, GPS, depth finder, radio, etc.). The Carolina Coastal Discovery Marine Education program reaches over 5000 students per year. Through grant funding we are able to offer free field trips to schools throughout South Carolina. Learn more about our education programs.
