WEEKLY SOUTH CAROLINA WEATHER 2016

WEATHER SUMMARY:

Warm, sunny weather was observed on Monday. Greer, Florence and Allendale all reached a seasonal 77 degrees. At 4:00 p.m., both Columbia airports reported a relative humidity value of 18 percent. Clear, blue skies and north winds kept conditions cool on Tuesday. At 2:00 p.m., Georgetown and Charleston reported north winds gusting at 28 mph. McColl and Hemingway recorded a high temperature of 63 degrees. Sunrise temperatures on Wednesday fell to 30 degrees at Dillon and Whitmire, and to 31 degrees at Rock Hill and Hartsville. Laurens and Calhoun Falls shared a Wednesday afternoon high temperature of 62 degrees. Strong storms, some with small hail, developed around midnight and raced eastward into Thursday's daylight. Between 3:35 a.m. and 3:45 a.m., "straight-line" winds, estimated by the Columbia NWS Storm Survey Team at 80-90 mph, snapped trees and caused localized property damage from the northern part of Saluda County, south of Chapin and over portions of Lake Murray into Ballentine. Instruments at Flotilla Island recorded a wind gust of 64 mph at 3:45 a.m. The McEntire ANG AP recorded a 54-mph wind gust at 4:13 a.m. Rainfall amounts measured on Thursday morning included 0.73 inches at Holly Hill, 0.65 inches at Lake City and 0.49 inches at Florence. West winds on Thursday afternoon reached 40 mph at Greenville Downtown AP, and 39 mph at Clemson-Oconee AP and Shaw AFB near Sumter. The Beaufort AP (KARW) was the state's warmest Thursday location with 77 degrees. Gusting west to northwest winds continued on Friday and Saturday. At 10:00 a.m. on Friday, Anderson and Columbia's Hamilton-Owens airports both measured west winds of 23 gusting to 35 mph. Winds on Saturday peaked at 41 mph at the Marion County AP, 39 mph at the Orangeburg AP and 38 mph at Lancaster's McWhirter Field AP. Modified arctic air arrived for Sunday morning. Cheraw's Lynch Bellinger Field AP noted 28 degrees at the 5:15, 6:15 and 7:15 a.m. observations. Greenwood, Manning, Sumter, Kingstree and Conway all reported a freezing 32 degrees. Light frost formation was observed over emerging corn near Eastover. Partial sunshine during the morning changed to overcast skies during the afternoon hours. At 3:00 p.m., the temperature at Anderson, Aiken and Johns Island was a more February-like 57 degrees. Edisto Island and Sullivan's Island reported Sunday's mildest afternoon temperature with 66 degrees.

The highest official temperature reported was 80 degrees at Table Rock State Park, Walhalla, Chesterfield, Columbia Metro AP, Bamberg, Barnwell, Georgetown AP and Jamestown on April 4. The lowest official temperature reported was 28 degrees at Pickens County AP, Table Rock State Park, Spartanburg, Rock Hill AP, Lancaster McWhirter Field AP, Cheraw Lynch Bellinger Field AP and Whitmire on April 10. The heaviest official 24-hour rainfall reported was 0.93 inches at Pickens ending at 7:00 a.m. on April 7. The state average rainfall for the seven-day period was 0.3 inches. The state average temperature for the seven-day period was three degrees below the long-term average.

South Carolina river stages were near normal. The Charleston Harbor Ravenel Bridge reported a water temperature of 64 degrees. Springmaid Pier at Myrtle Beach reported a surf water temperature of 62 degrees.
