July 1916

A hurricane made landfall near Bulls Bay on July 14 and moved slowly northwestward. The storm slowly dissipated over the Upstate a few days later. The heavy rainfall associated with this system produced the most extensive and destructive floods in the history of the Santee River System, with authentic records going as far back as 1840.
