The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources Hunter Education Program is dedicated to the safe enjoyment of our outdoors. Through this program, students learn about responsibility and ethics in the field, as well as firearms safety.

Who needs a Hunter Education Card?

All residents and non-residents born after June 30, 1979, must complete a hunter education course before a hunting license can be obtained.

Which Hunter Education Course is right for you?

SCDNR offers four (4) options to take the Hunter Education Course.

1. Instructor-led Classes

White-tailed deerThe preferred Hunter Education method is through a free eight (8) hour instructor-led classroom course. Classes maybe offered in a one day class or split over two nights. All classes end with a Test to pass the course.

2. Online Self-Study Course

The third party vendor (Hunter-Ed) who provides this online course charges $15.00 to take the course and pre-exam. Hunter-Ed offers daily (including weekend) live customer service via email or telephone with a toll-free number. Today's Hunter online course is the only approved internet course for South Carolina.

3 Steps to complete Today's Hunter Online Course

  1. Take the above approved internet course

  2. Successfully complete the online exam at the end of this course and print out the online course completion voucher.
    Note: You will not be able to print the completion voucher unless you successfully pass the online test.

  3. Take the Final In-person Exam to complete your hunter education certification. Review the List of Testing Sites for the closest testing site near you or call 1-800-277-4301.

3. CD Self-Study Course

A free self-study course on CD is also available. Call 1-800-277-4301 or send an email with your name, and mailing address to padgettk@dnr.sc.gov and request a CD be mailed. The course is taken at home at the student's leisure, but students must take supervised final examination at an official testing site to complete the course. List of testing site.

3 Steps to complete CD Self-Study Course

  1. Take the CD course. The Course Instructions are provided in the Adobe PDF format.
  2. Print completion voucher
  3. Take the Final In-person Exam to complete your hunter education certification. Review the List of Testing Sites for the closest testing site near you or call 1-800-277-4301.

4. Self-Study Workbook

A free self-study workbook is available for those who do not have computer access. This course is taken at home at the students leisure. To request a self-study workbook call 1-800-277-4301 or send an email with your name, and mailing address to padgettk@dnr.sc.gov.
