Research - Culture
The culture of aquatic organisms for food, commercial sale, ornamental purposes, and conservation is known as aquaculture. Aquaculture of marine organisms is called mariculture. Finfish mariculture at SCDNR is concerned with developing cultivation technologies and husbandry techniques that improve our understanding of the natural environment. The ability to observe reproduction and identify factors that affect growth and survival of organisms in a laboratory improves our knowledge of their requirements in the wild. Fish culture may include research into scientific fields such as nutrition, physiology, genetics, ecology, toxicology, behavior and economics.
