2005 Canon Envirothon
The 2005 Canon Envirothon competition was held from July 18th to the 24th in Springfield, Missouri. The First Place team from South Carolina, Strom Thurmond High School’s FFA team, was scheduled to fly out of Columbia Metropolitan airport on July 18th, but that flight was cancelled. The team tried again to get on two other flights that afternoon unsuccessfully. After rescheduling flights a number of times, by 9:30pm on Tuesday the 19th, the team was disheartened and decided to forfeit their trip to Missouri. United and Delta airlines were unable to get the team out of Columbia mainly due to the pop-up thunderstorms that were occurring. Those storms affected flight schedules across the country. Add to that a group of 7 traveling together, and the availability of seats diminished chances of getting a flight out, even when dividing the group in two.
The South Carolina Envirothon Executive Committee apologizes for the lost opportunity to these students.
The events as they occurred were unpredicted and out of the control of the SC Envirothon. If you would
