Cloudiness associated with the passing of Hurricane Dennis started the week. Cool northerly winds held high temperatures in the 80"s. On Tuesday morning record low temperatures in the 50's were observed. Late summer heat returned during midweek and into the weekend. Sunny skies early Sunday gave way to clouds as the remnants of Dennis looped back into North Carolina. By late Sunday evening, showers were entering the north midlands. Statewide temperatures for the period averaged one degrees above normal.

The maximum observed temperature was 102 degrees on September 5 at Jamestown. The minimum observed temperature was 44 degrees at Cedar Creek on the morning of September 1. The heaviest official 24-hour rainfall was recorded at Myrtle Beach with 2.00" ending at 7:00 a.m. on August 30. Statewide rainfall for the period averaged 0.2 inches.
