Research and Monitoring

Beginning in 1988, SCDNR has been conducting surveys of the wading bird colonies in the coastal plain of South Carolina. Over 300 sites have been used as nesting colonies by wading birds since 1998. During any year, only a portion of the colonies are active. Aerial surveys, ground surveys, and nest monitoring are used to monitor the status of wading birds in South Carolina.
