October 9, 2015Dungannon Plantation Heritage Preserve: Partial closure, limited access due to flooding
Due to significant rainfall and flooding, the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has limited access to Dungannon Heritage Preserve. “The influx of water has left the spillway/footbridge and dike section of the preserve inaccessible” says DNR Heritage Trust Biologist James Fowler. "Once water levels subside, staff will be able to better assess the condition of the footbridge. As of now, the footbridge is not safe to use and is closed to the public. There is also a 200-foot section of dike beyond the spillway that will need to be repaired. Due to the extent of this damage, repair of the dike will take significant time."
If you visit the open areas of the preserve, please be aware that the preserve is holding a large amount of water on the trails system. Users are advised to use care and avoid the portion of the preserve that has been closed. The closed area is marked with flagging and barricaded. DNR appreciates the public’s patience while the agency takes time to assess the storm damage and repair such areas. DNR will make every effort to reopen the entire area as soon as possible.
