S.C. High School Fishing State Championship April 28 on Lake Greenwood

The Bass Federation, in partnership with FLW Outdoors, will host the 2nd Annual Student Angler Federation (SAF) South Carolina High School Fishing State Championship at Lake Greenwood.

The state championship is a two person team event for students in grades 9-12. Registration for high school anglers and their coach, who will provide the boat they compete in, is now open online. Check-in starts at 6 p.m. on Fri., April 27 at the Greenwood Arts Center in the Federal Building, 120 Main St., Greenwood. A mandatory rules briefing to follow at 7 p.m.

The event is being supported locally the Greenwood Regional Tourism & Visitors Bureau. If you’re not an SAF member, there’s a $25 per angler entry fee for the state championship, which includes full FLW Outdoors and The Bass Federation (TBF) membership benefits.

The winning two-person team from each state championship will advance to an FLW Outdoors/TBF High School Fishing Conference Championship held in conjunction with a National Guard FLW College Fishing Conference Championship. Those winners will advance to the FLW Outdoors/TBF High School Fishing National Championship held in conjunction with the National Guard FLW College Fishing National Championship in the spring of 2013. All SAF members and state championship participants qualify for the largest event in high school fishing, the 2012 High School Fishing World Finals to compete for thousands of dollars in college scholarships and prizes. Each team that qualifies for a conference and/or national championship will receive a travel allowance to help offset expenses. The National Champions will also each receive a $5,000 scholarship to use at the university of their choice.

The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) partnered with The Bass Federation to form Youth Bass Fishing League Clubs at middle and high schools around South Carolina. Contact DNR Aquatic Education Coordinator Lorianne Riggin at (803) 737-8483 or RigginL@dnr.sc.gov to find out more about the Bass Fishing Clubs and their tournaments.

It's more than just the thrill of reeling in the big one and enjoying time with friends, fishing club members also learn information about fisheries management, artificial lures, attractants and more.

Interested in forming a bass fishing club at your school and becoming a part of the Youth Bass Fishing League? All you need to do is get a minimum of six students (within the 11-18 year old range) with dues paid and you can have a Youth Bass Fishing League Club. You'll also need an adult at your school to help lead the Youth Bass Federation Club, provide advice and help arrange at least two club tournaments, fundraisers, speakers and other learning sessions pertaining to fishing for club meetings.
