Night Sky in the Lowcountry Educational opportunity available

Come discover the Lowcountry night sky on Tuesday Jan. 24 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and learn about our place in the solar system with Sky Rangers Kristen Marshall Mattson and Marie McClune as part of the ongoing Coastal Exploration Series. The workshop focus will be on the constellations of the winter hexagon and use the familiar constellation Orion to "star hop" to neighboring star groups. Bring binoculars to help you spot lesser-seen space objects and dress to be outside.

Please register by contacting Lauton Sutley at SutleyL@dnr.sc.gov.

Kristen is an environmental educator with the LowCountry Institute and a co-instructor of the Master Naturalist program. Marie is a docent at the Coastal Discovery museum and former geology/astronomy teacher. Both completed the Astronomical Society of the Pacific’s online workshop to become "Sky Rangers."

The goal of the Coastal Explorations Series, free of charge to the public, is to raise regional awareness of issues pertaining to South Carolina's marine resources, the importance of conservation and the significance of historical preservation in the Lowcountry area. The program aims at fostering a relationship between the S.C. Department of Natural Resources and the public while increasing stewardship of South Carolina's natural resources.

The program will be held on Spring Island at the Art Barn. To get there: take highway 170 to the intersection of Snake Road/Callawassie Drive. At that traffic light, turn onto Callawassie Drive (right if you are coming from Bluffton/Hilton Head, left if you are coming from Beaufort). Continue on Callawassie Drive until you reach the entrance gate. Tell them you are participating in the Coastal Explorations astronomy program, and proceed across the causeway. Take your first left onto Spring Island Drive. Cross another causeway, and when you reach the 3-way stop, turn left continuing on Spring Island Drive. You will reach another 3-way stop. Turn left onto Mobley Oaks Lane and proceed to Barksdale Lane (just past the barn and horse pastures). Turn right on Barksdale. Look on the right hand side of the road for a sign saying "Art Barn" and follow it to the red building where we will start our workshop.
