National Flood Safety Awareness Week March 14-18
Floodwaters can be swift, powerful and, at times, deadly. Advanced planning can help protect lives and minimize property losses due to flooding. With the spring approaching, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the S.C Department of Natural Resources have partnered once again to promote National Flood Safety Awareness Week for March 14-18.
National Flood Safety Awareness Week is intended to highlight some of the many ways floods can occur, the hazards associated with floods, and what you can do to save life and property. The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Flood Mitigation Program houses a wealth of information that can help you, your family and your municipality plan and prepare for a flood and even reduce the risks of flooding in your area.
Did you know that flooding is America’s number one natural hazard? Do you know your flood zone? Are you at low, medium or high risk for flooding? Is there any way you could mitigate some of that risk? According to NOAA, floods claim nearly 100 lives and cost billions in property damage in the United States annually.
