Florence motorcycle rally raises $10,000 for youth programs
The Florence Co. Sheriff's Dept. recently sponsored a 9-11 Benefit Motorcycle Ride and raised $10,000 for youth programs. The event will help fund the youth program Camp Pee Dee and S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) youth hunts in memory of SPC Thomas Caughman. The event also honored our military, first responders, law enforcement and the victims of the 9-11 tragedy.
Approximately 700 bikers, including Sheriff's Deputies and DNR Law Enforcement, made the 68 mile motorcycle run throughout Florence and Darlington counties.
The Harry Hampton Wildlife Fund accepted a check for $2400 from the proceeds to help fund the DNR Take One Make One program (TOMO). TOMO is an innovative approach to introducing and re-introducing the youth and families of South Carolina to hunting, fishing, and shooting sports. The program has the ultimate goal of halting the local and national downward trend in participation in these activities. TOMO is designed to teach students about the total outdoor experience, and to increase their awareness of the value of wildlife and the natural environment by encouraging experienced adults to "pass on" traditional outdoor skills.
The Hampton Fund is a private, non-profit corporation governed by a volunteer board of directors from across South Carolina which partners with DNR to benefit conservation of wildlife, marine and other natural resources in South Carolina. Funds are obtained solely through private donations, special promotional projects and fund-raising events.
Army Specialist Thomas Caughman of Lexington was an avid outdoorsman who grew up hunting and fishing. SPC Caughman was assigned to the 3rd Platoon, Alpha Company of the 458th Engineering Battalion in Baghdad, Iraq. On June 9, 2004, while on a mission to locate roadside bombs, Caughman's platoon was ambushed by insurgents and the Humvee on which he was the turret gunner was struck by rocket propelled grenades and small arms fire, resulting in his death.
The Florence Co. Sheriff's Dept. will commemorate the tenth anniversary 9-11 Benefit Motorcycle Ride in 2011. Please contact Lt. Wayne Howard (843) 665-2121 ext. 339 for more information about participating or sponsoring the event.
