Aug. 13 deadline for Oak Lea, Tuomey WMA dove hunts
The S.C. Department of Natural Resources is offering, for the first time, a public drawing for the opening day of dove season (Sept. 4) at the Oak Lea Wildlife Management Area in Clarendon County and Tuomey Wildlife Management Area in Sumter County. The draw requirement is an effort to improve both the quality of the hunt and the safety of the participants. Pre-registration is required and the deadline for the applications is Aug. 13.
Public drawings will be held at noon Tuesday, Aug. 17 to select participants for the opening day dove hunts. One hundred and fifty (150) hunters will be selected to hunt at the Oak Lea public dove field opening day. The hunt will begin at 12 p.m. Seventy-five (75) hunters will be selected to hunt at Tuomey public dove field. This hunt will also begin at 12 p.m.
There is no cost to apply for either of the hunts. Up to five people can apply together for a single hunt. Applications can be typed or legibly handwritten; however, the applicant must identify which hunt they are applying, mailing address, telephone number, and the name and age of each participant. Applications that are incomplete, illegible or a duplicate will be discarded or disqualified.
Applications should be sent to the following address: S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Office, Oak Lea Dove Hunt Application or Tuomey Dove Hunt Application, Attn: Willie Simmons, P.O. Box 167, Columbia, SC 29202 or faxed to (803) 734-6020.
All applicants will be notified of the selection and mailed a notice by Aug. 23. If selected for the hunt, each participant must keep the notice in their possession at all times while on the field during opening day of dove season. Hunt permits are not transferable.
Contact the Columbia DNR Office at (803) 734-3886 for additional information on these hunts or additional dove hunting opportunities.
