Charleston student wins 2009 S.C. Junior Duck Stamp contest

Weston DeWolff, a high school student from North Charleston’s School of the Arts, won "Best of Show" in South Carolina’s 15th annual (2009-2010) Junior Duck Stamp Contest with his color pencil drawing of a Redhead Duck. DeWolff’s art teacher is Marie Nichols of the School of the Arts.

DeWolff’s work will be entered in the 2009-10 National Junior Duck Stamp Contest with other state winners later this year. The S.C. Junior Duck Stamp exhibit is on display Feb. 12-14 at the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition in Charleston.

The popular South Carolina Junior Duck Stamp competition for 2009, tailored after the prestigious state duck stamp contest, was judged in Columbia on Feb. 3 at the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) headquarters.

Students, from nearly 40 schools across the state, submitted some 800 entries to the 2010 South Carolina Junior Duck Stamp competition. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards were given in four class groups (Grades K-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12), including one overall "Best of Show," and 64 honorable mention ribbons. The top 100 Junior Duck Stamp entries will also be on display during the Palmetto Sportsmen’s Classic, March 26-28, at the State Fairgrounds in Columbia.

The winners of Grades 10-12 will also have an opportunity, on Feb. 16th, to enjoy a day in the ACE Basin with a few of the featured artists of the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. The artists will demonstrate their art form while answering questions from students.

The S.C. Junior Duck Stamp Program is a conservation education curriculum for South Carolina students in grades K-12. The S.C. Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Federal Duck Stamp program, Southeastern Wildlife Exposition and the Harry Hampton Memorial Wildlife Fund jointly sponsor the Junior Duck Stamp contest in South Carolina with the support of many others. For more information on South Carolina’s annual contest, write Junior Duck Stamp Program, S.C. Department of Natural Resources, P.O. Box 167, Columbia, SC 29202 or call (803) 734-3885 in Columbia.

Based on the national program created by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, South Carolina's Junior Duck Stamp contest is designed to engage students in a variety of curriculum studies while incorporating wildlife management principles.

The state "Best of Show" design is selected from among the 12 first-place winners representing all four groups and goes on to represent South Carolina in the 2009-10 national competition. National Junior Duck Stamp judging is open to the public at a location to be announced. A new Junior Duck Stamp is released by July 1st each year by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The stamps are sold by the U.S. Postal Service and Amplex Corporation for $5 each.
