Deer hunting begins Sunday, Aug. 15 on some private lands
The much-anticipated start of the 2010 deer season is just around the corner, and the S.C. Department of Natural Resources reminds hunters the deer season on some private lands gets underway on Sunday, Aug. 15.
The old law that provided for hunting on Saturday when the season opening date fell on Sunday was repealed in 2008 by the General Assembly at the request of the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
The opening or closing date falling on Sunday created confusion among hunters and was a carry-over from a time when many people did not hunt on Sunday and when Sunday hunting of big game was actually prohibited in certain parts of the state. The season for all species of game will open on the date specified by law regardless of whether a Sunday is involved.
Hunting is prohibited on Sundays on all Wildlife Management Areas lands. On private lands statewide, Sunday hunting for all game is legal except bear hunting, which is prohibited on Sundays in Game Zone 1. Find out more about deer hunting on private lands (Pdf file).
