Map Modernization meeting in Columbia Sept. 18

The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Flood Mitigation Program will conduct the Post Preliminary DFIRM Community Coordination Meeting (PDCC), as part of the Map Modernization Program for Richland County, and its municipalities, on Friday, Sept. 18, 2009, at 10 a.m.; to be held at the Richland County Council Chambers, 2020 Hampton Street, 2nd floor, Columbia, SC. The Map Modernization Initiative is a 5-year, billion dollar project implemented by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to update the nation’s Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) on a countywide basis. FEMA, the National Service Provider, DNR, and local governments are working together to successfully accomplish the goals of the Map Modernization Initiative, which is to produce an accurate picture of the flood risk, to promote responsible growth and sound floodplain management. County and municipal personnel had been previously invited to a scoping meeting that was held in the above-mentioned county.

The PDCC meeting will serve to educate local officials on the Post Preliminary Phase of the Map Modernization Initiative and their responsibilities in its implementation within their jurisdiction.  The Post Preliminary Phase includes the Compliance Period in which localities will be required to review their recently updated flood insurance studies and update their current local flood damage prevention ordinance.
