Check Wildlife Management Areas, Heritage Preserves website before visiting

Make sure to check the calendar of events and closures of Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) and Heritage Preserves at the S.C. Department of Natural Resources website when planning your visit. Popular properties, such as Botany Bay Plantation, Donnelley, Bear Island and Santee Coastal Reserve WMA’s,  close for special hunts and/or maintenance at various times throughout the year.  To find out specific closure dates go to the DNR Managed Lands section and look up specific properties by name and then click on Events and Closures to find the most recent information.

You can browse by location and search by activity. Check specific boat ramps and bird sanctuaries. Get driving directions and GPS coordinates for fish hatcheries, public fishing lakes, scenic rivers and much more.

S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) owned and managed WMA and Heritage Preserves are protected areas that play a critical role in conserving fish, wildlife and other natural resources, and as such serve a different purpose than state park lands. Appropriate and compatible uses of DNR managed lands are hunting, fishing, wildlife or other natural resource observation, wildlife or other natural resource photography.

South Carolina's natural resources are essential for economic development and contribute nearly $30 billion and 230,000 jobs to the state's economy. Find out why Life's Better Outdoors.
