A one-day youth only deer hunt with dogs on the Northampton Wildlife Management Area portion of the Francis Marion National Forest has been scheduled for January 6th.
The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the U.S. Forest Service have scheduled the youth only deer hunt with dogs in conjunction with the statewide youth day deer hunt. The DNR and the U.S. Forest Service have a vested interest in promoting quality hunting experiences for youth hunters.
In order to participate in the deer hunt with dogs on the Northampton Wildlife Management Area, a hunter must be between the ages of 10 and 17 and must be accompanied by a licensed adult 21 years of age or older. There are no license requirements for youth participating in this special hunt. The adult is not allowed to harvest or attempt to harvest game during the youth hunt, and harvest limits for youth hunters will be two deer of either-sex per hunter. Shotguns and buckshot only are allowed for this hunt. Other WMA regulations still apply.
For additional information, contact Will Carlisle, DNR Wildlife Biologist at (843) 825-3388, or Sam Chappelear, DNR Wildlife Regional Coordinator at (843) 953-5291, and visit the 2006-2007 rules and regulations.
The other WMA’s within the Francis Marion Forest, including Waterhorn, Hellhose, Santee and Wambaw, will be open to still hunting only during this special youth day. The above guidelines must also be followed on the still gun hunt for deer including all WMA regulations.
