Open House Oct. 21 at Marine Resources Center

The Marine Resources Center is hosting an Open House Saturday, October 21st from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Open House will be held at the Marine Resources Center, located at Ft. Johnson on James Island.  Activities of DNR Open House will feature seminars, demonstrations, informational displays, exhibits and educational cruises. The events will be showcased throughout the day. The DNR would like for the community to participate in learning how the Marine Resources Center is protecting South Carolina’s coastal resources.

“The Marine Resources Center is headquarters for the DNR’s efforts to monitor and manage the public’s resources in coastal South Carolina,” said Robert Boyles, Deputy Director of the Marine Resources Division. “We would like to invite folks to the Marine Resources Center so that they can learn a bit about our research, stewardship and outreach efforts, and how we can work together to sustain our invaluable coastal natural resources.”

Parking and transportation will be provided during DNR Open House from the James Island High School, located off of Ft. Johnson Road. All ages are welcome to participate, and DNR asks that pets not be brought to the event. Food will be available on the premises.

The following schedule notes seminar topics and respective times they will be offered during the day:

Hands-on demonstrations will be given during Open House, and the public can learn from DNR employees about cast netting, fly fishing, knot tying, fish printing, seafood cooking and fish tagging. Research exhibits will provide information on the Marine Resources Division’s research, management and education programs, and DNR staff will be on-site to answer questions about their programs.

Tours will also be a part of the DNR Open House, and will include a marsh walk and Ft. Johnson historical tour. Advanced registration is required for an educational cruise aboard catamaran E/V Discovery, and ages 10 and up are invited to learn about DNR’s marine education programs.  To pre-register, contact Elizabeth Vernon at (843) 953-9359, or Vernone@mrd.dnr.sc.state.sc.us.
