Free fishing classes, events set for National Fishing, Boating Week

Fishing classes and youth fishing events are just some of the events scheduled in South Carolina during the June 3-11 National Fishing and Boating Week celebration.

The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is offering an introductory fishing class for new anglers or those “who haven’t been in a while.” The class will be held 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 7. The class is free, but pre-registration is required. Call (803) 737-8483 by May 31 to register.

The class will be held at the Cohen Campbell Fisheries Center at 1528 Fish Hatchery Road in West Columbia. For more information on National Fishing and Boating Week events in South Carolina, contact, DNR aquatic education coordinator, at (803) 737-8483 in Columbia.

June 7 - Fishing 101 Class in Columbia. A free introductory fishing class for those who forgot how to tie a hook on a line (or never learned). Registration required. Call (803) 737-8483 in Columbia.

June 10-11 - Free Fishing Days in South Carolina. All South Carolina residents may fish for free without a license. If you want to try fishing, but don't have equipment, check out South Carolina's Fishing Tackle Loaner Program. Check the Fishing Tackle Loaner Site for more.

National Fishing and Boating Week events are aimed at increasing the enjoyment of fishing and boating and promoting environmental stewardship, according BeBe Harrison. “This celebration is all about re-connecting families in our communities through fishing and boating,” Harrison said.

National Fishing and Boating Week is administered by the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation in partnership with the National Fishing and Boating Week Steering Committee and DNR.
