The boat ramp at Lake Thicketty near Cowpens in Cherokee County will close May 2-5, Wednesday through Saturday, to allow catfish to be stocked in the lake before Saturday’s youth fishing rodeo.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) nets off an area of Lake Thicketty, including the boat ramp, and stocks the lake with about a thousand 2- to 3-pound catfish prior to the annual youth fishing rodeo. After the fishing rodeo, which will be held Saturday, May 5, the net will be pulled, the boat ramp will be reopened, and catfish are left in the lake for the angling public.

Lake Thicketty is one of 19 SCDNR state lakes that are managed intensively for quality fishing across the state. Thicketty is a 100-acre lake that offers fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, shellcracker and catfish.

The Lake Thicketty youth fishing rodeo is set for Saturday, May 5 from 9 a.m. to noon. For more information or to register, visit https://www.dnr.sc.gov/aquaticed/rodeos/index.html.

To visit Lake Thicketty, take I-85 South from Gaffney towards Spartanburg. Take Exit 86, turn to the right on SC Highway 39, go one and a half miles and turn to the left at the Lake Thicketty sign, this road will dead-end at the lake.
