Atmospheric Deposition Monitoring
The ACE Basin NERR has monitored precipitation quality in the Reserve since December 2001, and sampling is done in accordance with the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) guidelines. This nationwide program is designed to collect data on the chemistry of precipitation for monitoring geographical and temporal long-term trends in air quality. More information about this program and the data collected at sites throughout the United States are available at the NADP website (nadp.sws.uiuc.edu).
The NADP monitoring station is located Bear Island Wildlife Management Area in the ACE Basin NERR. Precipitation is collected weekly and sent to the NADP Central Analytical Laboratory where it is analyzed for a host of parameters (pH, conductivity, sulfate, chloride, nitrate, ammonium, ortho-phosphate, sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium). Another atmospheric deposition site operated by the Marine Resources Division is located at the Marine Resources Center in Charleston. The data from both sites can be viewed at the NADP website.
