SOUTH CAROLINA WEATHER AND CLIMATE

June 23 - 29, 1997


WEATHER SUMMARY
   The week began under high pressure with mostly sunny skies and above
normal temperatures.  Precipitation events were sporadic with only isolated
reports statewide.  A cold front arrived just in time for the weekend.  By
mid-day Saturday the front was nearly stationary across the Savannah River
region and southern coastal counties.  Cloudy skies held afternoon
temperatures in the upper 70's and low 80's.  Low pressure moved  along the
front through most of the weekend, producing overcast skies for much of the
state and rainfall amounts of three to five inches for the coastal counties.
Slow-moving thunderstorms caused flash flooding in Charleston County and
isolated wind damage in Berkeley County.  Statewide temperatures for the
period averaged near normal.

PRECIPITATION AND TEMPERATURE DATA
     The maximum observed temperature was 99 degrees on June 25 at Cheraw.
The minimum observed temperature was 53 degrees in Pickens on the morning of
June 28.  The heaviest official 24-hour rainfall was recorded at Cades with
4.23" ending at 7:00 a.m. on June 28.  Statewide rainfall for the period
averaged 1.6 inches.

Temperatures are expected to average near to above normal for the week.
Rainfall is expected to be near normal.  The Sandhill Experiment Station in
north Columbia reports an average 4-inch depth soil temperature of 81 degrees.

RIVERS AND SURF
     River stages are near normal.

     Surf temperatures at Myrtle Beach and Savannah will average around 78 
degrees.
