Office of Media and Outreach Internship Program

Number of Positions: Up to 5

Location: All internships will be in Columbia, SC

Compensation: All internships will be paid $10.00/hour, not to exceed 40 hours per week where allowed by their university. For universities that do not accept paid internships, the position will be non-compensated. Employee will have access to a state vehicle to be used for work-related travel ONLY. A personal vehicle will be required for personal transportation. Lodging for interns will not be provided, except for required overnight travel.

Duration: All internships will be 12 weeks in length. Most internships will be offered from mid-May through mid-August. Where possible, concessions will be made for internships to run in conjunction with school semesters. Fall semester beginning mid-August through mid-December and spring beginning mid-January through mid-May.

Description: The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources seeks motivated individuals to participate in a 12-week communications/outreach internship. These internships will provide real-world experience in marketing and communications. Depending on qualifications, individuals may be placed within the video, graphics, magazine, marketing, events planning, diversity outreach or litter programs.

Qualifications: Applicants must be working toward a degree in communications, marketing, journalism, multimedia design, biology, biology conservation, wildlife or fisheries management or closely related field. Recently graduated individuals seeking field experience are also encouraged to apply. Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license, good driving record, and the ability to clearly and effectively communicate and work independently with little supervision.

Work often will be at remote sites and in harsh conditions. . Completion of duties may require carrying and lifting of camera, video and/or exhibit equipment. Additionally, knowledge of wildlife, fisheries, and/or outdoor recreation is helpful.
